Word Limit is a clue-giving party game with multiple elements that push and pull against each other.

Run the game from your phone

Two phones running the Word Limit app display two cards:
that’s all you need to play Word Limit!

Overview

A card with six words is visible for everyone to see. You and one opponent are racing to give a single-word clue to indicate the Target Word. Only one clue is given – whoever is first to give the clue claims the chance to earn a point.

But don’t be too fast: your first idea might just as well describe a different word, and the Audience only gets one guess for the correct answer. Not only that, but the clue must obey a Word Limit: a small restriction on the form of the clue word, which reduces what you can say in the first place.

Get the Word Limit App for an in-app guide, but also see more detailed rules in the online manual.

Your clue doesn’t need to be a great clue for the the Target Word – just a better clue for it than the other five words. Plus, there is a Word Limit, and you need to be fast to win the race, so you definitely can’t expect great clues.

Share The App

Word Limit uses two phones to play. One app shows the Word Card, and the other shows the Limit Card. There’s no app gimmick here – it’s just using a phone to display cards, straight from the original deck of cards. The game works great as an app, and it’s easy for anyone to get it and share it. You can purchase the full Word Deck, but the Limit Cards are free to use: share this QR code to have a friend download the app to play the Limit Card!

Print and Play

Word Limit was first released as a deck of cards in 2020 on Kickstarter.

(That page comes with a lengthy description.)

This print-and-play pdf version of Word Limit was made for the basic reward tier, but honestly, at this point, if you put the effort into printing it for yourself, go ahead and print it:

We’ll see if there is demand for a new professional printing…

Completely unnecessary with the App, but this is how you make the physical word shield if you want to roll a die with the game:
